Mini Gomateshwara, Hilltop Sanctuary

Introduction

Gomatagiri, nestled on a 50-meter hill in Mysuru district’s Bettadoor, is a serene Jain tirtha (pilgrimage site) popular for its mini Gomateshwara (Bahubali) statue. The 6-meter-high monolithic statue, said to be 700 years old, forms an important Jain center of worship. Its relative quietness, compared to larger tourist locations, makes it perfect for spiritual calm and reflection while offering breathtaking views.

  • Mini Gomateshwara: The statue stands 6 meters high and is similar in design to the much larger Gomateshwara statue in Shravanabelagola (which is 17 meters tall).
  • Monolithic Marvel: The statue was carved in granite, using a single piece of stone during the Vijayanagara rule.
  • Annual Celebration: Once a year, the Gomatagiri statue is treated with an ‘Abhisheka’ (anointment) during the Maha Masthakabhisheka celebration, which usually falls in the month of September.
