Udupi

Heritage, Harmony & Waves

Nestled along Karnataka’s western coastline, Udupi is a destination where spiritual life, coastal landscapes, and culinary heritage exist in perfect harmony. Known across the world for its temple traditions and distinctive vegetarian cuisine, Udupi offers a deeply rooted cultural experience shaped by devotion, discipline, and simplicity.

The district unfolds through sacred rituals at ancient temples, quiet stretches of sunlit beaches, palm lined backwaters, and lively town centres influenced by education and youth culture. Whether seeking spiritual calm, coastal leisure, or authentic food experiences, Udupi presents Karnataka’s coastal soul in its most refined and welcoming form.

The Sacred Heritage Circuit (Spirituality & History)

Udupi’s identity is inseparable from its spiritual institutions and centuries old traditions.

Sri Krishna Matha

Founded in the 13th century by the philosopher saint Madhvacharya, this temple is the spiritual heart of Udupi. Devotees view the deity through the unique Navagraha Kitiki, a silver window symbolising humility and divine grace. The temple complex reflects a living tradition, with daily rituals, community kitchens, and disciplined monastic practices.

Ashta Mathas of Udupi

Eight monasteries surround the temple and collectively manage its affairs. The rotational transfer of responsibility, known as the Paryaya system, is a defining feature of Udupi’s spiritual administration.

Coastal & Nature Experiences

Udupi’s coastline and islands offer scenic escapes alongside cultural exploration.

Malpe Beach

A lively beach known for its golden sands, fishing harbour, and water based activities. Malpe also serves as the departure point for boat rides to nearby islands.

St. Mary’s Islands

A group of uninhabited islands famed for their striking hexagonal basalt rock formations and clear waters. Accessible by boat from Malpe, they offer a rare geological experience within Karnataka.

Kapu Beach

A serene coastal stretch featuring a historic lighthouse. The climb to the top rewards visitors with sweeping views of the Arabian Sea, especially captivating at sunset.

Swarna River Backwaters

Quiet river stretches and backwaters provide opportunities for boating, kayaking, and peaceful nature observation.
