BENGALURU:
The Karnataka government has launched an ambitious plan to turn its 320-km coastline into a world-class tourism destination. This initiative aims to boost the state’s economy significantly.
Chief Minister Shri D.K. Shivakumar led a high-level meeting. He was joined by Deputy Chief Minister Shri G. Parameshwar and Tourism Minister Shri K.J. George. They discussed strategies to align coastal growth with the state’s $1 Trillion economy goal.

The roadmap focuses on seven key strategic areas:
1. Accelerating Ongoing Projects
The government is reviewing 45 active projects. These projects represent a total investment pipeline of INR 718.63 Crores.
2. Strengthening Tourism Policy
Officials are aligning plans with the Karnataka Tourism Policy 2024–29. This includes assessing capital and interest subsidies alongside land fee reimbursements.
3. Boosting Competitiveness
The state is considering new incentives. These include 20% capital subsidies for new hotels and specific viability gap funding for mega projects exceeding INR 100 Crore.
4. Easing CRZ Rules
The government plans to remove bureaucratic hurdles under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. It will adopt successful models from Goa and Kerala to facilitate beach shacks and eco-friendly cottages.

5. Utilizing Land Banks
Authorities have identified 21 prime government sites spanning 233 acres. Notable locations include Kodi Kanyana Beach, Jappinamogaru, and Kundapura. These will soon open for fast-tracked PPP tenders.
6. Enhancing Tourism Products
New infrastructure is in the works. Plans include a Surf Academy at Sasihithlu, a luxury yacht marina in Udupi, and hubs for heli-tourism and seaplanes.
7. Seasonal Branding
The state will launch “Brand Karavali Karnataka.” This campaign features an annual events calendar to attract high-value travelers throughout the year.

Expert Collaborations
Industry leaders joined the review to provide unique insights. Dr. Sudarshan Ballal suggested positioning the coast as a premier Medical and Wellness hub. Tourism pioneer Arun Pai focused on heritage curation. Meanwhile, film director Rishab Shetty shared ideas for showcasing coastal culture through cinema.
“Our 320-kilometer coastline is a pristine, under-utilized global asset,” the leadership stated. “We are modernizing urban planning and enforcing eco-conscious limits. This will transform Karavali Karnataka into India’s premier gateway for sustainable hospitality.”
