About Skandagiri

Situated at roughly 1,350 metres above the Deccan plateau, Skandagiri rises in quiet defiance over the town of Chikkaballapura, about 70 kilometres north of Bengaluru. Most people know it as a weekend trek. But anyone who has stood at its summit just before dawn, watching a sea of cotton-white clouds fill every valley below while the first blush of sunrise turns the horizon deep amber, understands that Skandagiri is something more.

Also known as Kalavara Durga or Kalwarbetta, the hill carries centuries of history in its crumbling stone. The fortress that once crowned this Skandagiri peak was built during the reign of Tipu Sultan in the 18th century, serving as a strategic watchtower over the surrounding plains. In 1791, following his defeat in the Anglo-Mysore War, Tipu Sultan abandoned the fort. Since then, time and the elements have worn its ramparts into beautiful, photogenic ruins, a reminder that empires rise and fall, but hills endure.

Part of the Nandi Hills range, Skandagiri is wrapped in dense deciduous forest that shelters a surprising variety of wildlife and birdlife. As you ascend, the forest thins and the rocky ridgeline opens to sweeping 360-degree views of Nandi Hills glowing in the early light, of Muddenahalli below, and of the green corrugated landscape that stretches in every direction. This is why the Karnataka Forest Department has regulated entry, capping permits (typically 150 to 200 per slot) to protect this ecosystem for generations of trekkers to come.

The Skandagiri Sunrise Trek Experience

It begins the night before. At around 11:30 PM, you leave Bengaluru behind, the city slowly giving way to darkened highways and the smell of open country. By the time you reach Kalavara Village at roughly 2 AM, the air has changed entirely: cool, faintly earthy, threaded with the scent of the forest.

The Papagni Mutt at the base is your staging point. Headlamps click on. Permit details are verified at the forest checkpoint. A forest guide joins the group. The trek begins by roughly 4:00 AM – 4:15 AM to reach the summit before sunrise.

For the first kilometre, the trail is relatively flat, a semi-dry path that eases you into a rhythm before the forest closes around you. Around the 2.5-kilometre mark, the treeline breaks. The trail shifts from forest cover to an open rocky ridgeline. The final section to the summit is the most demanding: steep rock scrambles, narrow ledges, and sections where you will need hands as well as feet.

Then the sunrise comes. The horizon goes from black to deep red to gold. The light catches the edges of the clouds and sets them alight. Nandi Hills, twenty kilometres away, emerges from the mist like a dark island. The ruins catch the warm light.

Photographer’s Note: The cloud inversion ‘sea of clouds’ is most consistent between October and November, just after the monsoon ends. Arrive at the summit by 5:50–6:10 AM for the best light.

Most trekkers are back at the base by 9–10 AM, in time for a well-earned breakfast.

Skandagiri Hills Trail Guide

  • Total Distance: ~8 km round trip (4 km ascent + 4 km descent)
  • Starting Point: Papagni Mutt, Kalavara Village, ~3 km from Chikballapur
  • Summit: Kalavara Durga Fort Ruins + Ancient Shiva Temple (~1,350 m)
  • Trail Type: Forested lower trail transitioning to rocky ridgeline and boulder scrambles

Trek Difficulty & Who Can Attempt

Skandagiri is classified as a moderate trek, strenuous enough to feel like a genuine accomplishment, accessible enough that it doesn’t require months of preparation. The trail covers 8 km with a meaningful elevation gain, and the upper sections involve rocky scrambling that demands sure footing and basic agility.

First-time trekkers handle it well. The key is basic cardiovascular fitness, the ability to walk continuously for 2-2.5 hours at an incline. If you can manage a brisk 5 km walk without stopping, you can do Skandagiri. Children aged 10 and above attempt it regularly under adult supervision. Older trekkers with good fitness manage the trail comfortably at their own pace.

Best Time to Visit Skandagiri

October – March (Peak Season- Highly Recommended)

Winter is when Skandagiri is at its finest. Temperatures at the summit dip to 8–14°C on clear nights, making the night trek invigorating rather than punishing. Clear skies through February mean reliable sunrise views and comfortable conditions throughout the ascent and descent. This is the window most recommended for first-time visitors.

April – May (Manageable- Early Starts Advised)

Summer temperatures in the plains push into the mid-30s, but at altitude, early morning treks (reaching the summit before 7 AM) remain manageable. The skies are generally clear, and the views are sharp. Crowds thin significantly compared to the winter peak season, which means a quieter, more contemplative summit experience.

June – September (Monsoon- Approach with Caution)

The monsoon transforms Skandagiri into a lush, dramatic, misty landscape, beautiful to look at, significantly more demanding to trek. The rocky sections become slippery with algae and wet moss. The Forest Department issues trail closure advisories during heavy or sustained rainfall, and these must be followed.

What to See at Skandagiri

The Sea of Clouds

This is Skandagiri’s signature spectacle, and the reason trekkers set alarms for midnight. When atmospheric conditions are right, dense cloud layers settle into the valleys below the summit during the early morning hours, creating the illusion of a vast white ocean around the base of the hill. You stand on the rocky ridge above it, watching the cloud shift and breathe in the wind while the sunrise illuminates it from below. It is, by any measure, one of the most beautiful natural phenomena accessible within two hours of Bengaluru. Conditions are most reliable from October to November.

Kalavara Durga Fort Ruins

The crumbling battlements and stone walls of Tipu Sultan’s 18th-century fort crown the Skandagiri summit. Abandoned since 1791 after his defeat in the Third Anglo-Mysore War, the fort has been slowly reclaimed by wind and lichen over more than two centuries. What remains is evocative precisely because of its decay, rough-hewn granite walls open to the sky, archways leading to nothing, the outline of what was once a formidable strategic stronghold now softened by moss and time. Exploring the ruins at sunrise, with clouds filling the valleys below, is an experience that blurs the line between history and landscape.

Ancient Shiva Temple (Summit)

Tucked within the fort ruins at the summit is a small, ancient Shiva temple that predates the fort itself. Locally revered and maintained by devotees who make the ascent regularly, the temple is a quiet, meditative space on the otherwise dramatic summit plateau. The hill’s name, Skandagiri, connects it to Lord Skanda (Kartikeya, also known as Murugan in South India), the son of Shiva. Both the Shaivite tradition and the Murugan devotional tradition are woven into this summit’s spiritual identity.
