Rangayyanadurga Wildlife Sanctuary: The Haven of the Four-Horned Antelope

Hilly grasslands that protect the Four-Horned Antelope

Discover Karnataka’s unique scrubland sanctuary where the rare four-horned antelope reigns supreme.

Tucked away in the dry, rugged landscapes of Davanagere, Rangayyanadurga Wildlife Sanctuary is a conservation marvel. As Karnataka’s only refuge dedicated to the “Chausingha” or four-horned antelope, it offers a raw, offbeat adventure through scrub forests and rocky hills, perfect for those seeking the state’s authentic, untamed spirit.

Did You Know?

  • The Four-Horned Wonder: The resident antelopes
(Kondu kuri) are unique for having two pairs of horns – one pair between the ears and a smaller pair on the forehead – a feature found in no other living mammal.
  • Exclusive Habitat: This is the only wildlife sanctuary in all of Karnataka specifically established to protect this vulnerable species endemic to the Indian subcontinent.
  • A Hidden Gem: Established in 2011, this sanctuary covers 77.24 square kilometers of dry deciduous forest and scrubland, providing a critical ecological bridge in the Jagalur region.

Highlights

  • Antelope Spotting: Catch a rare glimpse of the shy, solitary Four-horned Antelope amidst the thorny shrubs and grasslands.
  • Wildlife Diversity: Beyond the antelope, keep your binoculars ready for Sloth Bears, leopards, jungle cats, hyenas, and porcupines.
  • Birdwatcher’s Paradise: The sanctuary is home to the vulnerable White-naped Tit and a variety of raptors and butterfly species.
  • Rugged Terrain Trails: Experience the thrill of trekking through rocky hills and open scrub forests that feel worlds away from the city.

Practical Information

  • Best Time to Visit: October to March (Post-monsoon and winter offer the best weather for trekking and sightings).
  • Photography: Excellent for wildlife and macro photography; carry a long lens for the shy antelope.
  • Essentials: Wear sturdy trekking shoes and carry sufficient water and snacks, as facilities within the sanctuary are minimal.
  • Permits: Entry usually requires coordination with the local Forest Department office in Jagalur or Davanagere.

Step off the beaten path and witness one of nature’s rarest spectacles. Plan your journey to Rangayyanadurga and support the conservation of Karnataka’s unique wildlife.

Location, Timings & Transport

  • Location: Jagalur Taluk, Davanagere District (approx. 45 km from Davanagere and 29 km from Jagalur).
  • Timings: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Day visits only).
