Thundering Waters with a Dash of Heritage

Overview

Located near Belagavi, Gokak Falls is one of Karnataka’s grandest waterfalls, earning its nickname as the “Niagara of Karnataka” for its horse-shoe shape and wide, powerful drop. The Ghataprabha River plunges over 50 metres from a sandstone cliff, surrounded by rocky outcrops and an old-world industrial past.

The falls are especially majestic during the monsoon, when the water thunders down in full force — creating mist, roar, and a visual spectacle.

Why Should You Visit

  • One of the most voluminous and wide waterfalls in the state
  • Offers a mix of natural beauty and colonial-era charm, with an old hydroelectric plant and British-era hanging bridge
  • Easy to access and family-friendly — with railings, viewpoints, and walking paths

It’s a great spot for photography, short hikes, and monsoon sightseeing.

How to Reach

Gokak Falls is about 6 km from Gokak town and around 70 km from Belagavi. It’s well-connected by road and easy to reach by car, taxi, or local bus. From the parking area, it’s a short walk to the main viewing zones and hanging bridge.

Swimming is prohibited due to the strong current and rocky terrain.

Best Time to Visit

July to October is the best season, when the river is full and the falls are at their most dramatic. During summer, the flow reduces significantly.
