Introduction

Basavakalyana, earlier known as Kalyana, is a town steeped in history and religious significance. Its fort, originally built by the Western Chalukyas, is a symbol of architectural resilience and was the seat of Basaveshwara—a great social reformer whose teachings shaped Karnataka’s Lingayatha community.

  • The fort was the royal capital of the Western Chalukya dynasty in the 10th to 12th centuries.
  • Basaveshwara, the founder of the Lingayatha faith, lived here and led a powerful social reform movement against caste discrimination.
  • The fort is uniquely camouflaged within natural rock formations, making it impregnable in medieval times.
  • It houses seven gates, with five still in good condition, including the monumental Akhand Darwaza made of massive red stone slabs.
