Barkur

A Forgotten Port with a Royal Past

Echoes of Alupa and Vijayanagara Eras

Barkur, near Udupi, was once a vibrant capital under the Alupa dynasty and later a provincial outpost of the Vijayanagara Empire. Today, it is an archaeological treasure trove — scattered with ancient temples, ruined forts, and historic inscriptions. The Chowlikere Fort and a series of stone temples tell of its maritime prosperity and cultural synthesis.

Barkur’s history is layered — Jain, Hindu, and Islamic influences all find space here. Though many of its monuments are now hidden under overgrowth, the town remains an evocative site for history enthusiasts seeking lesser-known chapters of coastal Karnataka.
