World Environment Day

World Environment Day is organized by the UN Environment Program every year to encourage the protection of the environment. Each year June 5th is marked as World Environment Day across the globe. During this day, various activities for the awareness and protection of the environment are carried out. UNEP rotates the host country of Environment day activities to encourage worldwide participation. This year, the theme of World Environment Day is ‘Ecosystem Restoration.’

Ecosystem restoration means aiding the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded due to pollution and human interference. It also includes protecting the ecosystems that are still unharmed. Healthier ecosystems with glorious biodiversity lead to more incredible benefits, including oxygen, soils, and timber. This is to motivate people from different parts of the world to take care of the ecosystems for a better future.

Karnataka is one such state in the country that boasts of rich biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. With over 5 national parks and 32 wildlife sanctuaries, Karnataka is known for preserving the ecosystem most beautifully. Not only this, but a critical part of the biodiversity hotspot, the Western Ghats also lies within the state. Karnataka forests support 25% of the elephant population and 10% of the country’s tiger population. Besides this, the state is also home to various endangered species unique to the region.

To encourage people to respect nature and its allure, Karnataka has taken various steps over the years. From preserving the wildlife and natural wonders to allowing tourists to step closer to nature, Karnataka is one of the few states that keeps ecosystem restoration above all. Jungle Lodges are one such initiative that enables people from different parts of the world to connect with nature. There are various lodges with different themes, such as adventure, beach, heritage, nature, and wildlife.

So, celebrate World Environment Day 2021 by participating in numerous activities, spending some time with nature, and promising yourself to restore the ecosystem, whenever and wherever required. All it takes is a collective effort to bring back the ecosystem in its most beautiful form.
