Start your day with a wholesome breakfast, Akki roti usually served with coconut chutney, some sago (curry) and clarified or pasteurised butter. Akki roti is a flatbread made of rice flour (Akki in Kannada means rice), grated carrots, onions, Indian spices and at times some fresh herbs like Dill leaves. Akki roti is high in carbohydrates and minerals such as sodium and potassium.

How can you make Akki Roti?

Fine rice flour is mixed with chopped onions, carrot, curry leaves, grated coconut, coriander leaves, salt, cumin and green chilli. These ingredients are thoroughly kneaded with water as well as oil and Akki roti dough are made. The dough is then applied on top of the banana (plantain) leaf, spread into a thin circular shape and transferred onto a tawa for heating. After a few minutes of heating on both sides on medium flame, Akki roti is ready to be served hot. There are two ways to make the akki roti. One is crispy like how the rest of the Karnataka cooks and one is a softer version like wheat roti made especially in Coorg or Malanadu region.

Served with: A small piece of butter is placed on top of hot Akki roti. Akki Roti is best consumed when it is still hot. Akki Roti is often served with spicy chutneys, curry or pickles.
