looking at Bangalore as the place for holistic healing.

are increasingly being referred to Bangalore for treatment.
Some of the specialities in the city include: |

The city's medical
facilities are all supported by state-of-the-art equipment
ranging from the technology to conduct Conscious Off Pump
Coronary Bypass Surgery to the Cardiac Cathlab that was
very recently launched in Germany. Hospitals in the city
leave nothing to be desired - often using Bangalore's strong
information technology networks to ensure that doctors can
continue to monitor critical patients even from home.
The average success rate in cardiac surgery done in Bangalore's
eight cardiac care hospitals in the last five years is 99.3%,
which is easily among the best in the world. |

Reconstructing the skull
base |
| |
|
 |
A rare
surgical feat in which a team of surgeons
in Bangalore removed a massive skull base
tumour had not only saved a life - but
also raised hopes of a panacea for cancer,
neuro and plastic surgery patients. Medical
experts were engaged in a 14-hour long
operation that involved micro-neurosurgery,
skull base surgery, craniofacial surgery
and complete reconstructive plastic surgery.
Such a complicated surgery is undertaken
by just a few hospitals in the world and
Manipal Hospital has become the first
in the Indian subcontinent to achieve
success. The patient was dectected with
a massive skull base undifferentiated
tumour of the size of a fist involving
the entire portion of her head between
the eyes starting from the roof of the
mouth through the base of the skull and
eroding into the brain. An incision made
on the skull - at the top of the head
- revealed that the tumour had grown into
the skull through the brain. The brain
had to be exposed and the tumour was removed
microsurgically. Although the success
rates are low in surgeries involving exposure
of the brain, this patient recoverd primarily
owing to the skill of the team led by
Dr. Sujay Rao and Dr. Anantheshwar. |
